Before & After

A Los Angeles home where every walkway, side yard and courtyard was torn out and rebuilt in brick pavers. Photographed on the survey in August and again the day we finished in September.

The side yard at the condensers. Worn, uneven brick that had settled around the A/C units — relaid on a compacted base in multi-tone pavers, with the run kept clear for service access.

The long side walkway. A narrow path of cracked brick and bare dirt down the side of the house, rebuilt full width with a brick soldier-course border holding the edge.

The courtyard and the tree. Bare dirt and loose stepping stones around the tree. It now sits in a raised brick planter with the paving run right up to it.

How It Was Built

The part you stop seeing once the pavers go down — and the part that decides whether they are still flat in five years.

New drainage line trenched in along the wall before paving — Drainage trenched and piped before a single paver was laid — water goes away from the house, not under the paving.

Compacted aggregate base ready for the pavers — Graded and plate-compacted aggregate base. Pavers laid on loose fill are what sinking and rocking come from.
